"Huh?" You asked softly as you approached the male standing in front of the glass case.
"I said it vas my fathers." Gilbert said.
You chewed on your lip, trying to think of something to say to diffuse the situation. Then you spotted the sausages on the bed.
"Um… those sausages look good." You said. "Did you make them?"
That seemed to cheer Gilbert up a bit because he turned around, smirking. The chick was still sitting on the top of his head.
"Nein. Miene bruder made zhem." Gilbert said. "Try zhem."
You picked up one of the sausages and took a bite. It tasted really good. Gilbert looked at you expectantly, waiting for a reaction. Even his bird seemed to be looking at you. To get them off your case, you gave them both a smile. Not a real one, but as close to a real one as you could get.
"Vell, how vas it?" He asked.
"Really good, thank you." you said.
Gilbert smiled, an actual smile, not a smirk, and his bird flew from his head onto yours. You reached up and cupped him in your hands. The bird looked up at you and nuzzled its head against your thumb, chirping. You smiled and giggled. The bird was so cute!
Gilbert raised an eyebrow. "I zhink he likes you." He said as he took the seat next to you.
You looked at him, that smile from his bird still on your face. "I guess so."
Gilbert chuckled. "Now zhat's a smile." Without him realizing, his hand made its way to your cheek. "Und he's got a name almost as awesome as mine!"
You barely registered it, but your head and Gilbert's were gravitating towards each other's.
"Oh yeah? And what's that?" You asked.
"Gilbird." He said, his lips centimeters from yours.
Before he could kiss you, Gilbird tweeted and flew in between the both of your, facing the door. Realizing what just happened, or almost happened, you scooted back. You and Gilbert turned to the door and saw Gil's brother standing in the doorway. His arms crossed.
"Vhat do you vant, Vest?" Gil asked, obviously upset at the interruption.
West? You thought questioningly, What kind of nickname is that?
"I came to tell you zhat vhen you cook, clean up."
"I did clean up!"
"Nein. Zhe dishes are still in zhe sink."
"But zhere clean!"
The brother rubbed his forehead and you turned to Gilbert.
"You cooked? I thought you said your brother made the sausages." You said.
Gilbert scratched the back of his head and blushed a little bit. "I didn’t zhink you vould eat zhem if I said I made zhem." He said as he stood up. "Vell, (name), zhis is miene bruder. Ludvig, zhis is (name). Get to know each ozher."
Gil left the room to put the dishes away and Gilbird perched himself on your shoulder. You turned fully to Ludwig.
"It's nice to meet you." You said, holding out your hand.
Ludwig took it. "Ja." He dropped hand and you reached up to pet Gilbird's head. "Look, (name), you seem like a nice girl un everyzhing. So I'll say zhis vone zhing. Be careful of miene bruder."
You tilted your head to the side. "What do you mean?"
"You'll see." Ludwig said before he left the room.
You turned your head to look at Gilbird. He seemed to shrug. You also shrugged and picked up the bird before laying down on Gil's bed to wait for him to return and start the project. You placed Gilbird on your chest and let him run around as you stared at the ceiling.
