"I want to break up." Your boyfriend said.
No less than a week ago, if this had happened, you would have no doubt gone home and cried your eyes out. But over the past week, so many things have gone wrong that this just wasn’t enough to make you cry any more.
You nodded and said, "All right," with a blank expression.
"We can still be friends." He said, thinking you were just putting on a brave face.
You just shrugged and walked away, leaving your boyfriend… actually EX-boyfriend… standing there. You sighed. You couldn’t go to anyone to talk to about this. Eliza was on vacation, Alfred was mad at you for missing his birthday party and Arthur… well Arthur was your cousin and it was weird to talk about this stuff to family.
You just decided to go to the library or something. Maybe you'd write, draw, or read some manga. You made your way to the library and to a somewhat secluded part. You pulled out a book from your bag and began reading from where you last left off.
"Vell, don’t you look dovn in ze dumps." Came the voice of someone you didn’t recognize.
You looked up from you book to look at who had spoken, stone faced. It was a boy, about your age, with sparkling ruby red eyes and snow white hair with a mischievous grin plastered to his face.
"Who are you?" You asked with a flat voice that matched your vacant expression.
"Vo am I? She asks." The boy said. "I am ze awesome Gilbert Beilschmidt from ze awesome Prussia!"
You looked utterly unimpressed. "And why are you here bothering me?"
"Vell, frau, you looked dovn in ze dumps, as I said before." Gilbert said.
You didn’t respond and just went back to reading. That is, before he plucked the book from out of your hands.
"Hey! I was reading that!" You said and reached out to snatch the book back.
He pulled the book back out of your reach. Then he looked at it, flipping the pages, his brow furrowed as if he was thinking.
"Zis looks like a very boring book." He said before setting it down on the table. "By ze vay, vat is your name?"
You narrowed your eyes at the boy, not sure if he really cared what your name was. "(Name). My name is (name) (last name)." you replied finally.
"Vell zen, I vill be seeing you, (name)." He said and slid your book back to you before he walked off.
You watched as the Prussian walked off. What a weird guy, you thought.
The next day at school you took your seat in class behind Arthur next to Alfred. Alfred didn’t try talking to you, so you guessed he was still mad at you. you sighed and the teacher walked in. She started writing a name on the board. First you saw a G than an I-B-E. Gilbert. B-E-I-L-S. Beilschmidt. Fuck. He was a new student.
Seconds later, the Prussia you met yesterday walked into the room with the same grin on his face from when you first met him. Then he spotted you, gave you a wink, and his grin widened. You sighed, your slight second of concern vanished and you kept your expression blank and unconcerned. He introduced himself and the teacher told him to take the desk next to you, which he did.
"Vell, vell, vell. It seems ve are in ze same class, frau." He said to you.
"You know my name. Use it." You said.
Alfred leaned over and poked you on the shoulder. "Who is that guy?" He asked, forgetting he was supposed to be mad at you. "Do you know him?"
You shook your head, deciding not to bring up the fact that he was supposed to be mad at you. "Nope. Met him yesterday in the library after I broke up with my boyfriend." You said. "He was a total ass."
"I'm right here, you know." He said.
The two of you ignored him. "You broke up with Ivan?" Alfred said. "DUDE! Why didn’t you tell me?"
You raised an eyebrow at him, asking him if he seriously was asking you that question. He blushed. "No. He dumped me, actually." You replied.
"So zat's vy you vere dovn in ze dumps yesterday." Gilbert said.
You finally turned to him. "If you must know, yes, that was what happened, though I wasn’t sad about it."
Gilbert rolled his eyes. "Just keep telling yourself zat, zough you did look a little sad."
"No. I wasn’t sad." You whispered to yourself. "I just stopped caring… about everything."
You didn’t think anyone heard you, but, without your knowledge, Gilbert did. He looked at you sadly before he caught himself, and he taped his trademark grin onto his face.
School passed and it turned out that Gilbert was in. Every. Single. Class. With you. It looked like the administrators found it to be a good idea to stick that Prussian with you. He kept bothering you, trying to get you to open up to him. You absolutely refused.
"Vat varped you so badly?" He asked following you to your locker.
"Why do you care?" You said, slamming your locker shut. "And why do you keep following me?"
"You're interesting." He answered simply.
You sighed and walked out of the school, Gilbert in tow.
"I'm also your new next door neighbor." He said and grinned.
Dear god my luck could not get any worse, you thought. "So that was why you came up to me yesterday at the library." You said remembering how the weekend that passed there was a moving van next door, though you only ever saw a blonde boy with blue eyes, not this Prussian.
He shrugged. "I figured I should introduce myself to my new neighbor."
He walked you all the way to the door to your house before he spoke again. "Vell, I'll see you tomorrow morning, zen."
Before he left he unexpectedly gave you a hug. It reminded you of Ivan's hugs. While he was hugging you, he whispered in your ear.
"I vill figure you out." He said. "Und I will save you from vatever varped you so badly."
Then he was gone. You ran into your house and up the stairs to your room. You bolted in and closed the door, leaning your back against it. Then you looked across the room out your window. You saw Gilbert opening the door to his bedroom. He dropped his backpack on the ground and then noticed you looking at him. He grinned and wiggled his fingers at you. You put your stony mask back on, walked up to the window, and pulled the blinds down.
There was absolutely no way you would let that idiot in.
He watched as you closed the blinds. He couldn’t help but laugh. You were so cute. Too bad he had to figure you out. Luckily, he liked the challenge. You were going to be his. He smiled a somewhat twisted and evil grin.
This was going to be fun.
